Microsoft tweet features M1 iMac
That's unfortunate.

There’s one thing you don’t do if you’re on Microsoft’s social media team, and that’s promote Apple products. It seems at least one person forgot that last week when they posted a tweet featuring an image of the M1 iMac.

The post, which was removed after a few hours, was about cleaning Windows machines “safely and smoothly.” Microsoft should know better than anyone that it’s not even possible to run Windows natively on M1 Mac models.

Microsoft messed up

Celebrities, influencers, and even company executives from the likes of Samsung and Xiaomi have long been getting caught posting or posing with Apple products that they shouldn’t really be using.

Microsoft is obviously pretty careful about that kind of thing, because as far as we know, it hasn’t been caught in Apple’s bed in the past. But one unfortunate person, who had access to the Windows Twitter account last week, messed up.

M1 iMac features in Windows tweet

“Spring Cleaning? Check out these tips on how to clean and run your device safely and smoothly from Microsoft’s Carmen Zlateff,” read the post, which was accompanied by a picture of someone using a green M1 iMac.

Followers were quick to point out the mistake and make jokes at Microsoft’s expense. But the tweet somehow remained live for several hours before it was finally wiped from the official Windows account.

It wouldn’t have been quite so bad if the Mac pictured had the ability to run Windows with Boot Camp. But that’s not the case for M1 Mac models, which cannot run Windows natively and require a third-party app like Parallels.

What about Surface?

According to Apple, it’s up to Microsoft whether new Mac machines with Apple silicon chips will be able to run Windows in the future. But right now, Microsoft says that’s “not a supported scenario.”

Either way, Microsoft has a whole lineup of its own Surface hardware, which isn’t too shabby (for Windows machines, at least). A picture of one of those devices would have been a much better fit for its Twitter post.
