A growing number of Mac users are reporting issues with external monitors and game controllers after updating to macOS Monterey 12.3.

Some say their Mac no longer detects connected displays at all, while others are frustrated that their Xbox, PlayStation, and other third-party gamepads are not functioning over Bluetooth — even when the controller is connected.

macOS Monterey 12.3 brings new bugs

Sadly, bugs are something we’ve come to expect from Apple’s software updates in recent years. Even minor releases that are designed to eliminate issues inevitably bring new problems for users to contend with.

macOS Monterey 12.3 — which adds Universal Control for the first time — isn’t without its fair share. In addition to causing complete logic board failures on some machines, the update is also wreaking havoc with accessories.

External monitor support is broken

Mac owners are taking to Apple’s official Support Communities forum and other online spaces to report problems with external monitors after installing its newest macOS release. Some see incorrect outputs, others see nothing at all.

“After updating my Mac mini today to 12.3, my monitor now no longer displays an image via USB-C, just keeps saying on no signal on the monitor,” wrote one user on Apple’s forum. “I have tried HDMI and same issue.”

“Similar problem with Mac mini (2018) + LG 34BL850 with USB-C,” said another. The issue has also been reported on MacBook Air, MacBook Pro, and iMac in the same forum thread — regardless of which display is used.

There is no fix

“MacBook Air M1 12.3 made my external display no longer be detected,” said another user. “I am pretty unhappy, and I need this basic function for my job.”

As things stand, it seems there is no workaround that gets external displays working again under macOS 12.3. Users have tried reconnecting their screens, resetting their machines, and using different cables with no success.

Strangely, the issue does not appear to be widespread. Although the number of complaints is growing, other macOS 12.3 users say that their external monitors are still working as expected. The same goes for macOS’ new controller bug.

Bluetooth controller support also broken

Although Bluetooth controller support is functioning normally for most, some users say that their Xbox, PlayStation, and other third-party gamepads are no longer working inside macOS after upgrading to the latest Monterey release.

Even when the controllers are shown as connected in Bluetooth preferences, macOS does not seem to be registering their input — or at least not communicating it within games, rendering controllers useless.

“Controller support is completely broken with macOS update 12.3,” wrote one Reddit user. “My DualSense controller does nothing when paired over Bluetooth after updating. Tried with multiple different games.”

Waiting on Apple

“I tried to connect my Xbox controller to my MacBook, even though the controller is registered in Bluetooth setting, but it doesn’t function at all,” reported another on Apple’s forum.

This is another bug without a workaround. No amount of computer or controller resets, or repairing the Mac and the controller can fix the problem, so users are left waiting for Apple to address these issues in a future macOS build.
