Apple plans to sell a “lock adapter” for Mac Studio that will prevent would-be thieves from swiping the machine from users’ desks, according to one report.
Mac Studio already has a small hole on its base where a lock can be fitted, but it seems there’s not enough room for a standard Kensington option. Apple looks to be working with a third-party on a better solution that will come soon.
Stopping Mac Studio thieves
Its incredibly compact design and rather steep price tag makes Mac Studio an easy and attractive target for computer crooks. It can be easily picked up, despite its weight, and shouldn’t slow you down too much during a getaway.
Apple hopes to prevent that from happening with a new third-party accessory that will keep Mac Studio “physically secure without modifying or damaging” the device, according to a leaked memo seen by MacRumors.
Apple plans Mac Studio lock
It’s not yet clear what the lock will look like, how it will work, how much it will cost, or when exactly it will go on sale. It seems Apple’s memo just mentions that it is on the way. No official announcement has been made.
However, it won’t be the first computer lock Apple has offered. The company already sells a $49 option for Mac Pro, but that’s more of a metal bracket that allows a Kensington lock to be attached — rather than a complete system.
The Mac Pro’s lock also prevents the shell of the machine from being removed, so none of its internals can be swiped. That likely won’t be necessary for Mac Studio since it seems there’s no obviously simple way to get into it.
