Work on a folding iPhone reportedly goes on. Apple is secretly testing “multiple prototypes that contain foldable displays,” according to a reliable tipster.
But the company is also watching closely to see if foldable phones will turn out to be a fad without staying power.
Folding iPhone still in testing
Word that the iPhone-maker continues working on folding handset comes from Dylandkt. The latest update come in a thread on Twitter.
1/3 For those who are curious about a foldable iPhone, Apple is definitely working and testing multiple prototypes that contain foldable displays. Too many compromises still exist with foldable display technology though.

According to this source, research continues but a shipping product is still quite some time in the future because “too many compromises still exist with foldable display technology.”
And Apple doesn’t want to copy the Android handset makers that released folding devices that are little better than prototypes. It wants to get a folding iPhone right. “Apple is keen on making sure that the design is not a regression from the current form factor of the iPhone,” said Dylandkt.
Another the reason for the delay is Apple is being cautious about the whole idea. As the tipster said, “There are also concerns as to whether foldable smartphones will continue to have a place in the market or will fall into obsolescence.”
Dylandkt is somewhat mysterious but has come through with solid leaks in the past. They have a 77.5% accuracy rate according to AppleTrack.
Other sources agree that Apple continues to research foldable screens. Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo even raised the possibility of a folding iPhone in 2023 but only “if Apple can solve the foldable mobile device’s key technology and mass production issues.”
