Apple’s bid to do away with the notch could lead to a pill-shaped camera cutout in its display, as well as hidden Face ID sensors, according to a tipster.

Recent rumors suggested that iPhone 14 will be the first to feature a “punch hole” camera cutout in its screen rather than current models’ notch. And though we initially assumed that would be circular — like those on Android devices — that may not be the case.

Notch quite a notch

We’re all pretty used to the notch now, and it’s probably safe to say the cutout really doesn’t bother that many people anymore. Still, it would be nice if Apple could get rid of it to give us more screen space, and that could happen this year.

iPhone 14 Pro will be, according to a growing number of reports, the first flagship handset since iPhone X to do away with the notch in favor of a small cutout for its front-facing camera. But what shape will that cutout be?

While most Android manufacturers opted for circles or “teardrops,” Apple intends to use a pill-shaped hole instead — like the one in our quick mockup above — according to Twitter tipster @dylandkt.

Dylan also says that in order to make this happen, Apple will shift its Face ID sensors under iPhone 14 Pro’s display. “The functionality of these sensors have not been negatively affected by this change,” he added.

iPhone 14 Pro might have hidden Face ID

This isn’t the first time we’ve heard Face ID could be hidden away beneath the iPhone’s screen. Display analyst Ross Young — who has proven reliable in the past — also expects Apple to make this move for iPhone 14 Pro.

We would normally recommend that you take rumors like these with a pinch of salt, and it’s probably sensible to do just that. But Dylan, like Young, does have a great track record when it comes to predicting Apple’s moves.

The iPhone 14 series undoubtedly will make its official debut this fall. Here’s what else to expect from this year’s iPhones.
