Where do you characterize the iPad and iPhone in the music making process? They can be your instruments, recording console, video edit system, and playback devices all in one. With new tools comes new talent, taking advantage of what progress has to offer. The Age of the iDevice in Music has only just begun.
Korean musician Yoari and an all-iDevice band performed this cover of Beyonce’s Sweet Dream in June 2010. The apps used in the piece are noted during the performance – a nice touch. And not a bad jam!
Combining equal doses of high tech gadgetry and holiday schmaltz, members of the North Point iBand in Alpharetta, Georgia recently staged an entertaining performance of holiday classics Carol of the Bells, Rockin Around the Christmas Tree, and Feliz Navidad utilizing only iPads and iPhones as instruments. The infectious selection, combined with Casio’esque sonic fidelity, ensured that a good time was had by all!
Texas musician Ellen Once Again decided to show off all this capability as a solo performer, and recorded a mashup of Train’s Hey Soul Sister and Yael Naim’s New Soul using only her iPad, iPhone, a mic and a MIDI keyboard. Video editing was done in iMovie – also on the iPad – and the result is an entertaining demo.
The Bebot app makes another appearance here, North Point iBand used it as well. Reminds me of a theremin. These lads may be on to something…
And in October 2010, after their real instruments were stolen, NYC band Atomic Tom created a promotional spot for their upcoming tour on a subway car using only their energy and their iPhones. It’s certainly easier for the band to fit into a crowded space using virtual instruments – and riders seemed to enjoy things as well.
