Ted Lasso is, as far as awards and cultural relevance goes, the biggest hit Apple TV+ has had yet. Last week, season two of the heart-warming comedy debuted on Apple’s streaming service — and, well, it’s a smash hit so far.

According to Deadline, citing data from Apple, it was Apple TV+’s biggest premiere day ever, largest opening weekend to date, and no. 1 debut across all series and movies. That’s pretty impressive.

Apple says that the Ted Lasso season two premiere grew Apple TV+ viewership 200% compared to the previous weekend. It also provided a big boost to existing Apple TV+ comedies including Schmigadoon, Physical and Mythic Quest. All benefitted from the “halo effect” of Apple TV+.

Apparently, the viewership for the opening weekend of Ted Lasso season two was 6x bigger than the viewership for the opening weekend of season one. That’s as a result of word-of-mouth over the past year, cementing the show as a hit.

While Apple didn’t provide any hard numbers (which would have given a bit more context as to how many people are actually watching Apple TV+) it certainly sounds like it’s been the kind of win Apple would have hoped for. No wonder the company has already renewed Ted Lasso for a third season.

Episode two of the show debuts on Apple TV+ this week. For those who haven’t seen it (or just want to revisit it), the entirety of season one is currently available to view on Apple TV+. You can read Cult of Mac‘s review of Ted Lasso season two here.
