Apple has teamed up with the BBC for a documentary that will provide a timeline of the President of the United States in the hours after the 9/11 attacks. 9/11: Inside the President’s War Room will debut on Apple TV+ this September, marking the 20th anniversary of the attack on the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center.

Narrated by actor Jeff Daniels, the documentary will include never-before-seen testimony from former President George W. Bush, Vice President Dick Cheney, national security advisor Condoleezza Rice, Secretary of State Colin Powell, chief of staff Andy Card, director of communications Dan Bartlett, and many, many others. It will also include filmed archive and close to 200 previously unpublished photographs.

An article for Deadline notes that the documentary:

“recounts the 12 hours after the strike on that momentous day, offering rare and unique insight into the dilemmas of decision making against the clock, as those involved provide intimate, revealing, and heartfelt details for the first time.”

An historic documentary

It certainly sounds fascinating, if harrowing, viewing. Apple has yet to release any trailers or images from the documentary. But it’s definitely one I’ll be intrigued to check out. I’m also interested to know how much of it will be made up one new interviews, and how much is archival material. Previous serving presidents have featured in Apple TV+ productions before — with President Obama, who succeeded Bush in office — having been interviewed by Oprah on Apple’s streaming platform. It would be very interesting to hear the recollections of those figures involved, and how their thoughts have changed in the intervening couple of decades.

Apple TV+ is available for $4.99 per month as a subscription from Apple. It’s also available slightly more cheaply as part of an Apple One subscription bundle. The 9/11: Inside the President’s War Room documentary will also air on BBC One in the UK.
