Randomo_redditor runs her MacBook Pro and iPad with a monstrously wide Dell monitor, at 49 inches. But even that curved showstopper fails to provide enough real estate for all she does. So she added a 27-inch Dell display in portrait mode on the side.
Now she can fit everything on the screens. And we do mean everything. Randomo already made the most of her widescreen by using an app to split the screen into thirds, for different uses.

As many widescreen enthusiasts know, various apps can help you manage your screen. Several are discussed in the comments in Randomo’s setup post.
Go ultrawide: there’s an app for that
One commenter asked the perfect question.
“I have never used an ultrawide and am asking out of curiosity,” they ventured. “Can you split the screen in let’s say 3 parts, the middle where you have your main programs in ‘full screen’ and on the left and right to it notes, email, slack, spotify?”
Randomo had a ready answer.
“Yeah I currently split my ultra wide in thirds! First third is Chrome, middle third is IntelliJ, and last third I had Slack, Notes, Terminal, etc. But that last third got too crowded, lol.”
So her ultrawide is still split into thirds, but the third third spills over to the vertical Dell monitor on the right.
Randomo revealed she uses an app called Magnet to divide up her screen into work zones. She previously used Spectacle, but finds Magnet offers more functionality. Spectacle, while still possible to download, is no longer actively maintained, its website says.
Other options for screen splitting
Other Redditors had other suggestions. One uses BetterTouchTool’s window-snapping function as well as Hookshot. Another recommended Rectangle.
A couple of others praised Divvy – Window Manager for its customization options. One said they use it to have 40% of the workspace in the middle and 30% on either side for other tasks. Another called its custom keyboard shortcuts to move windows to different places a “game changer.”
