If you’re lucky enough to get strong and speedy 5G coverage where you live, you’ll be pleased that it gets prioritized over Wi-Fi in iOS and iPadOS 15 when your usual network is slow.
The new feature expands your 5G capabilities on iPhone 12 and M1 iPad Pro and could make certain tasks — like downloading high-resolution movies and music or uploading data to iCloud — significantly faster.
5G is slowly expanding its reach to more cities and regions in many countries around the world. And for some subscribers, it lives up to its promises, delivering speeds that are significantly faster than 4G.
In fact, in some areas, 5G speeds are even faster than those offered by broadband providers. If that’s the case for you, you’ll be able to prioritize 5G connectivity over Wi-Fi when iOS and iPadOS 15 land this fall.
New options for 5G in iOS and iPadOS 15
Supported devices “automatically prioritize 5G when Wi-Fi connectivity on networks you visit occasionally is slow, or when you are connected to captive or insecure networks,” reads the iOS 15 preview page.
Apple also says some services, including backing up to and restoring from iCloud, streaming audio and video, downloading high-quality content, and syncing iCloud Photos will be enhanced by 5G connectivity.
Devices with 5G connectivity currently include iPhone 12, iPhone 12 mini, iPhone 12 Pro, iPhone 12 Pro Max, and the 2021 iPad Pro with M1 chip.
iOS and iPadOS 15 out this fall
iOS and iPadOS 15 are scheduled to make their public debuts this fall. Developer betas are available now if you have a Developer account, and more stable public betas should be arriving in the coming weeks.
