TSMC, the world’s largest semiconductor maker, has reportedly commenced production on the next-gen A15 chip for the iPhone 13.
It seems that Apple’s expecting to have a big hit on its hands, too. Digitimes reported Wednesday that “demand for the chip surpass that for its predecessor last year in scale, according to industry sources.”
The new chips are being made with the same 5-nanometer fabrication process as last year’s A14 chip. The number of nanometers refers to the size of the transistors. The smaller the size, the more can be packed onto a piece of silicon. While more transistors doesn’t necessarily mean a more powerful chip, this is a broadly observable trend.
Despite the same fabrication process as last year’s chips, the A15 chip supposedly will take advantage of an “enhanced” manufacturing process that should result in better performance than the A14.
A15 chip and more: Coming soon on iPhone 13
Aside from the A15 chip, a few other rumors indicate what we can expect from the iPhone 13. A smaller notch has been widely reported. A buttery-smooth ProMotion screen is also supposedly in the works. The handsets supposedly will introduce ultra-fast 5G mmWave to more countries. iPhone 13 also might come in a new matte black color.
This year’s iPhone supposedly will include LiDAR on all models and a possible 1TB storage option. However, the most anticipated feature is the return of Touch ID — this time located inside the iPhone display. It could serve as an alternative or addition to Face ID for unlocking handsets. As with the iPhone 12 series, Apple supposedly will release four different handsets in the iPhone 13 lineup.
