Location-tracking AirTags could cost just $39

AirTags are allegedly being released next month because AirPods Studio won’t be.
After more than a year of rumors, AirTags might soon see the light of day.

Apple’s location-tracking AirTags could retail for $39, and measure a diminutive 32mm x 32mm x 6mm, making them smaller than the rival Tile Pro item trackers.

Apple leaker Max Weinbach shared the information in a new video from EverythingApplePro. The video notes that the information comes from a “retail source,” and that, while the price is “an estimate,” it is likely that AirTags will retail for approximately this figure.

Interestingly, there’s no mention in the video of a rumored two sizes of AirTags. This is something that Apple leaker l0vetodream suggested last year. That earlier report also suggested that the AirTags keychain will be sold separately.

Weinbach notes in the same video that:

“AirTags [will] use the Find My network from devices to send the UUID of the AirTag to the Apple servers for pinging. No other data from the tags get transferred. My guess is there’s just a BLE beacon broadcasting that, at any given moment, that the iPhones pick up on. Tags can also pick up information on other nearby tags, so it can kind of hop off one another. When tags come in contact with other tags, they’ll pass that data along.”

Upcoming AirTags

Rumors about Apple’s tracking tags began at least as far back as September 2019. Since then, they’ve been frequently rumored, but Apple has yet to announce them. In June 2020, sounds discovered in iOS code gave an indication of how the AirTag-finding process will work. The AirTags will work with Apple’s “Find My” app, allowing users to easily track whatever item they’ve attached the tags to — such as wallets, keys, or anything else.

Current speculation is that the AirTags will debut at Apple’s next media event, expecting to take place in April.
