Apple won’t update the iPhone SE in 2021, according to a trusted analyst. But there is a new version coming the year after. And this will be the first in this line of budget iOS handsets with 5G cellular networking.
The prediction comes from Ming-Chi Kuo in a note sent to investors Monday and seen by Cult of Mac.
What to expect in the 2022 iPhone SE
This Apple prognosticator also says the 2022 iPhone SE will pack a faster processor than the current one.
But there won’t be many other changes. “The design and most of the specifications will be similar to the existing 4.7-inch iPhone SE, with the significant changes being 5G support and processor upgrade,” said Kuo in his note.
This isn’t the first time he’s predicted the SE 3 isn’t the coming in 2021. Previously, Kuo said it’s because Apple had to put a higher priority on component makers preparing for the iPhone 13.
AppleTrack gives the analyst from TF International Securities a 78.2% accuracy rating on previous predictions. He taps sources in Apple’s supply chain for his insights into future products.
iOS on a budget
The iPhone SE 2 is Apple’s only current handset with a Home button. For smartphone buyers on a budget, it remains a very appealing product. Given the $399 price, it’s also a key player in Apple’s mobile strategy.
The model, which sports a speedy A13 processor, is particularly important in emerging markets like China and India, where less-expensive handsets are key to success.
