Apple’s North Carolina data supercenter is soon to go live, but it will sadly have to do so without the man most largely responsible for its creation: Apple’s Global Data Center Director Oliver Sanche passed away of a heart attack on Thanksgiving Day.

Having come to Apple back in September of 2009 from eBay, Sanche was the man in charge of Apple’s data center strategy. He was the right man for the job: a strong advocate for green initiatives, his previous work at eBay resulted in the construction of a state of the art facility in Utah which was notable for its large-scale energy efficiencies.

It’s terribly sad news. Next year, when we’re all streaming our iTunes media libraries from the cloud, or slurping down the next big OS X update at blazing fast speeds, let’s try not to forget the behind-the-scenes visionary who made it all happen, only to pass away mere months before the monument to his vision and ingenuity was complete.
