Former First Lady Michelle Obama and talk show host Ellen DeGeneres teamed up with Apple to give away Macs and iPads to students at Randle Highlands Elementary School in Washington, D.C.
The gift-giving marked the premiere of Ellen’s Greatest Night of Giveaways on NBC. Apple’s donation means that every teacher at the school will receive a MacBook Air and every student will get an iPad. The school itself will get new iMacs. DeGeneres is also donating $100,000 and equipping the school with a new basketball court.

Michelle Obama, Ellen, and free iPads
This isn’t the first time Apple teamed up with DeGeneres for a giveaway. In an Oprah-like stunt, the TV personality and actress Julia Roberts last year gave out free iPhone XR handsets to the live crowd at one of DeGeneres’ shows. The iPhone giveaway marked day five of The Ellen Degeneres Show’s customary 12 days of giveaways for the holidays.
It’s also not Obama’s first association with Apple. In 2017, she took the stage at WWDC to talk about diversity and innovation.And when her husband, President Barack Obama, was in the White House, he was famously an Apple fan. Although could not use an iPhone, Obama admitted to spending several hours every night using his iPad. (He even received one a bit early from Steve Jobs.)
Apple, for its part, has long pushed education as a central part of its messaging. The education market was a strong one that developed early in Apple’s lifetime. Today, CEO Tim Cook remains vocal about the importance of young people learning to code.
