Apple’s just seen fit to tighten up the Terms and Conditions applying to iTunes rentals… and in doing so have finally closed a loophole that allowed rented television shows to be transferred between the iPad and other iOS devices.

Previously, the iTunes Rental Terms and Conditions distinguished between television shows rented on the iPad and those rented on other iOS-devices, technically allowing television shows rented on the former device to be transferred willy-nilly to any other iPhone, iPod Touch or AppleTV.

Movies or TV shows rented using your Apple TV, iPhone 4, or iPod touch (4th generation) may not be moved. Movies rented using your iPad may not be moved.

The new update to the Terms and Conditions has now been updated to simply read: “Content rented using your Apple TV, iPad, iPhone 4, or iPod touch (4th generation) may not be moved.”

That seems pretty clear. If you rent some video content on your Mac, though, you’re still free to transfer it to an iOS device for portable viewing… just not the other way around.

One thing that may be interesting about the updated verbiage is that it now refers to rented content instead of rented video. Could this imply that Apple might experiment with other types of rentals in the future? Rentable e-books seem like a good idea to me.
