A new concept device, with an iPhone given an iPad-like makeover, shows what Apple might be planning for 2020.

This artist’s render is based on leaked information that the iPhone 12 will borrow some of the design elements of the iPad Pro.

The concept render was created by Ben Geskin, an artist who makes a habit of turning rumors about upcoming Apple products into renders that often turn out to be correct.

This time, he started of with a dream “perfect” iPhone, without the notch. Then he added the screen cutout that will surely be a feature of the 2020 iPhone.

iPhone 11 + iPad Pro = iPhone 12

Geskin didn’t pull this out of thin air. Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, after speaking to unnamed sources, said earlier this fall:

“We predict that the new 2H20 iPhone design will change significantly […] The metal frame and the front and rear 2/2.5D glass are still used, but the metal frame surface will be changed to a similar design to the iPhone 4, replacing the current surface design.”

Recent iPhone designers have used curved edges. Go back a few years and iPhone 4 had square ones.

But it’s not necessary to jump all the way to 2011 to find an Apple device that fits this description: the 2018 iPad Pro has square edges, just like iPhone 4.

And that why Geskin and others have created iPhone 12 renders that look like a blending of the current iOS handset with the most-recent iPadOS tablet.
