The App Store is striking out on its own!

In a subtle, but significant, change, iOS and Mac app listings on the web now direct users to a URL at apps.apple.com, instead of itunes.apple.com.

This follows WWDC, where Apple shared details of a world beyond iTunes. Apple is breaking up the iTunes app into Music, Podcasts, and TV apps. While you don’t need to worry about your iTunes content, this is the latest example of Apple shifting away from that branding.

In terms of usability, this change doesn’t make any significant difference. It’s not like the Podcasts web interface, which received a more radical interface overhaul recently. As part of that, Apple also moved podcasts from itunes.apple.com to podcasts.apple.com.

This means that, right now, movies and TV shows are the only things still hosted on itunes.apple.com. This could well shift in the near future, which would make sense to keep in line with other changes.

As noted, this isn’t exactly a giant change in itself — although it’s emblematic of a much bigger transition. iTunes has been a bloated mess for years, as more and more features were packed into what was once a streamlined application. Given the size of the App Store, it makes sense that it strikes out on its own.

Even if it does fleetingly make us nostalgic for the early 2000s glory days of iTunes!
