Fortnite’s latest patch is out and there are lots of changes for Battle Royale players to look forward to.

The version 9.20 release adds a brand new Storm Flip item, a Quick Heal button on Android and iOS, and a long list of bug fixes and improvements. There’s no sign of the heavy shotgun and revolver, though.

Epic recently promised the arrival of the new Storm Flip item inside Fortnite, but its teaser didn’t explain what the item would do. Now we know, and it looks awesome — especially for those who like to move late with the storm circle.

Fight safely in the storm

The Storm Flip is a throwable item that explodes on impact to create a sphere-shaped zone. If you throw it inside the storm, that zone becomes safe, so you can fight with other late rotators without taking damage.

If you throw the Storm Flip outside of the storm, the zone becomes a mini storm. It will deal the same damage as the current storm circle.

The Storm Flip zone lasts for 20 seconds before dissipating, and you can only carry one in each inventory slot. This is an epic item that can be found in chests, vending machines, and on the floor.

Other items and weapons get tweaks

The version 9.20 update also tweaks some other items and weapons. The availability of sniper rifles and explosive weapons in loot carriers has been reduced, as have the chances of getting a high-powered rare item.

It now takes 20% longer for the mounted turret to overheat, while the maximum charge time of the Boom Bow has been increased from 1 second to 1.25 seconds. In addition, all variants of the hunting rifle have been vaulted.

“While we value the variety of longer range sniping options, the Hunting Rifle has become somewhat outclassed by the Infantry Rifle after it was changed to hitscan,” Epic explains in its patch notes.

“In addition, there are a few Sniper Rifle options available and we feel it doesn’t currently fill a necessary role in the item lineup.”

Quick Heal on mobile

This update also introduces a new Quick Heal button on Android and iOS. It’s designed to allow health and shields to be consumed more easily with touch controls. Here’s how it works:

  • Quick Heal is a separate button that can be added in the HUD Layout Tool (it is not activated by default).
  • The button icon displays priority healing items in your inventory. Here’s how those priorities work:
    • Priority 1: Chug jug over all other healing items.
    • Priority 2: Health over shield items.
    • Priority 3: Medkit over bandages.
    • Priority 4: If shields are below 50, small shields are applied.
    • Priority 5: If shields are equal to or above 50, shield potions are applied.

Mobile players will also find that it’s now easier to close come screens where the “Close” button was too small. You will also see an error message if you attempt to install a Fortnite update without enough storage space.

Sword Fight LTM

The new Sword Fight limited-time game mode has now entered the rotation. In this mode, chests contain epic or better weapons as well as the occasional Infinity Blade.

“Fight your opponents to find out who is worthy of the Blade … and who is not,” Epic says.
