Apple has received virtually every award there is for advertising and marketing, but one announced this week caught the company by surprise.

The Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity announced it would award Apple Creative Marketer of the Year for 2019, a first for the company.

The award, handed out at Cannes Lions every year since 1992, is not for any one Apple campaign. It’s for all of the companies campaigns across TV, online and other media platforms.

“[This] is a tremendous honor, and it is a bit humbling,” Tor Myhren, Apple vice president of marketing and communications, said in a written statement that appeared in AppleInsider today. “The creative world is watching, and… there’s a lot of creative talent out there who someday might work at Apple. It’s important to Apple in terms of potential future talents.

“I think.. the core principles that drive our marketing have never changed. At the center of everything is simplicity, really stripping things down to what matters, and creativity. We concentrate on creative expression and making tools —and marketing —for creative people.”

Myhren will accept the award for Apple during next month’s festival.
