Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars now plays nicely with modern iOS devices.

Rockstar’s mobile hit is the fourth in the GTA franchise to add support for iPhone and iPad variants with edge-to-edge displays and the latest A12 processors. The latest version is free for those who have already purchased Chinatown Wars.

Chinatown Wars made its initial debut just over ten years ago. It is one of the few GTA games built from the ground up for mobile devices — specifically the Nintendo DS. And like classic GTA games, it is played from a top-down perspective.

Chinatown Wars was incredibly well-received by critics and won a series of awards for the best handheld game. It’s now even better on iOS for those who have an iPhone X, iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max, iPhone XR, and 2018 iPad Pro.

Chinatown Wars is awesome again

Today’s update allows Chinatown Wars to take advantage of Apple’s newest displays and faster processors. It’s the first major update the game has received since 2014 when Rockstar added support for the iPhone 5, Retina displays, and MFi controllers.

Similar updates have previously been issued for Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, GTA: Liberty City Stories, and Grand Theft Auto: Vice City. Rockstar has also updated its other titles — Max Payne Mobile and Bully: Anniversary Edition — for modern devices.

The only game still waiting for enhancements is Grand Theft Auto III — the first GTA game that took players to a fully 3D open world in which they play in the third-person perspective.

The new Chinatown Wars update is free GTA: Chinatown Wars by Rockstar Games for those who have previously purchased the game. Simply download it from the App Store today. If you don’t already own the game, it’s priced at $4.99.
