If you purchased a MacBook Pro between May 2007 and September 2008 and subsequently had problems with the wonky GeForce 8600M graphic chip inside, NVIDIA has just opted to settle a class-action lawsuit on your behalf.
The GeForce 8600M GPUs used by the 15 and 17-inch MacBook Pros of 2007 and 2008 had numerous problems, including intermittent video, blanks screens, distortion and other issues. The problems were so bad that Apple has spent years covering the affected machines, extending the warranty on the afflicted models by two full years… or until at least May 2011.
The new settlement offers free repairs and refunds for customer paid-for repairs directly from NVIDIA, if your MacBook Pro customer exhibits any of the symptoms listed above .
Since Apple’s already been fixing the GPU in this era of MacBook Pros for years, that’s unlikely to mean much for you as a customer, but presumably means that Cupertino is now, at the very least, billing NVIDIA for the time and expense of having spent the last couple of years fixing up this mess.
