These days it’s normal to watch movies on our Macs. Usually that means streaming from Netflix or some other online service. But why should your old Blu-ray discs be left out of the party? Maybe you’ve got the discs lying around, or copied to your hard drive. Either way, you won’t be using QuickTime.

There are two ways to play Blu-ray discs on Mac: Convert Blu-ray for iTunes or make use of Blu-ray player software directly. If you’re looking to bring Blu-ray discs to your Mac, this free app can make it happen.

Free Leawo Blu-ray Player makes any Mac a Blu-ray player

Leawo Blu-ray Player for Mac is a totally free media player combo that includes region-free Blu-ray disc player, DVD player, HD video player and audio player. It is perfectly designed for all your Blu-ray or DVD playback needs. Free is good no matter what, but especially when it means adding usefulness to your devices. With this player, you can watch any Blu-ray/DVD discs regardless of the disc’s region code or other restrictions.

As a QuickTime player alternative (but with better performance), Leawo Blu-ray Player for Mac supports non-encrypted 4K video playback and 4K screen display, meaning it can deliver a true 4K movie experience on your 4K screens. (It also supports surround stereo audio output.) This free Blu-ray player could also perform as a free ISO image file player to play back video ISO image files directly on your Mac.

So, if your Mac has a built-in Blu-ray reader, or you have an external one, you’ve got an easy way to make it the hub of a home entertainment system.

Leawo’s straightforward interface (.pdf) belies a bevy of options. The Mac Blu-ray player offers a ton of playback control, including a virtual remote that appears when you load the disc. A power manager monitors your Mac’s battery status during playback, so you don’t kill your computer for the sake of entertainment. The app also offers support for multiple languages, and tons of options for video playback. Deinterlacing, scaling, post-processing and other tools make it easy to dial in the perfect video output.

Loading a disc brings the file right to the main interface — just click the disc, the files will load, and you’ll be able to select and play them as you please. To play an ISO image, there’s a big green “Open File” button to find the file wherever it’s saved. After that, it’s the same process.

You can even create video playlists from various files. It’s worth repeating: You can’t do any of this with QuickTime.

Score free extras

Leawo Blu-ray Player is a solid standalone app. But it can also be a way to score some other cool apps you’d usually have to pay for.

The Share to Win feature offers a way to win copies of iTunes Cleaner, iTransfer, iOS Data Recovery and Music Recorder. Just click the little share icon at the bottom of the app, and it’ll guide you to a share window on Facebook. Share the post, and then it will ask you which of the four apps you want. After the post has been up for a full 24 hours, a license code and download link will be sent to your email address. If you’re using a Mac, they’ll send the Mac version. (If you’re using Windows, you’ll get that version.)

Not only is this a great way to play Blu-ray discs on your Mac, it’s also a chance to enhance your Mac in other ways. And all that for zero dollars. What’s not to like?
