Apple has reportedly approved a 10-episode sci-fi series co-created by Simon Kinberg, who has written many of the X-Men movies going back to 2006. This show will apparently be part of the streaming video service Apple is expected to launch this year.
Not much is known about Kinberg’s latest creation yet, though it’s scheduled to start filming this summer.
Citing unnamed sources, Deadline describes it as “a large large budget, ambitious, character driven genre show.”
In addition to writing 2008’s Sherlock Holmes, Kinberg wrote or co-wrote X-Men: The Last Stand, X-Men: Days of Future Past, X-Men: Apocalypse, and the upcoming X-Men: Dark Phoenix.
The as-yet unnamed project for Apple is being co-written with David Weil, who also created The Hunt for Amazon.
Get ready for an Apple TV service
This is one of literally dozens of television programs that Apple is paying to have produced, spending over a $1 billion on them. The company is quiet about its plans but these will allegedly be part of a streaming video service to compete with Netflix and Hulu.
Unlike its rivals, all those upcoming shows will supposedly be available free to customers who own an iPhone, iPad, or Apple TV. The streaming service will reportedly debut in the US during the first half of this year. A global launch will come later.
Apple’s ability to draw in top talent like Simon Kinberg has been cited as a reason why the company shouldn’t purchase a movie studio to bolster its catalogue of shows for this service.
