Samsung is attempting to break into the growing tablet market with a full-court press against the Apple iPad. The Android-based Galaxy Tab device will be available on all four U.S. carriers: Verizon, Sprint, T-Mobile and AT&T, which already offers 3G service for the iPad. Although pricing and availability are still not settled, two carriers said the Samsung device could be available either in weeks or months.

AT&T announced it would sell the Galaxy at its retail stores and from its website “in the coming months.” Along with offering 3G service for the iPad, AT&T is currently the exclusive provider for the iPhone.

“We’re looking forward to expanding out computing device portfolio and giving our AT&T customers more great choices,” AT&T emerging devices president Glenn Lurie said.

Verizon, the largest U.S. carrier, said the Galaxy Tab will be available on its network “in the coming weeks.” Verizon Wireless executive vice president and chief marketing officer John Stratton called the Galaxy Tab “an exciting addition to the Verizon Wireless Android portfolio.” Verizon will install a number of its V CAST apps on the device, including V CAST Music with Rhapsody, V CAST Video on Demand and V CAST Song ID.

The Galaxy will be available in either Wi-Fi only or with both Wi-Fi and 3G. The device is powered by a 1GHz Cortex A8 ARM processor with a 1,024×600-pixel screen. The Galaxy Tab will include a rear-facing camera and forward-facing 1.3-megapixel forward-facing camera for video-conferencing. An updated iPad expected during the first quarter of 2011, reportedly will also include a forward-facing camera and Apple’s FaceTime video-chat feature.
