Nintendo could finally be preparing to bring The Legend of Zelda and Donkey Kong to mobile. The two beloved franchises have proven to be incredibly successful on the Japanese company’s own consoles, and there’s a sign they may be coming to your pocket.
The Legend of Zelda is perhaps the biggest Nintendo franchise that hasn’t yet graced iOS. Super Mario has made the leap, as have Animal Crossing and Fire Emblem, and Mario Kart is on its way next year. But what about the lovable Link?
It certainly makes sense for Nintendo to bring Zelda and other popular franchises to Android and iOS. Its existing titles have raked in a ton of cash, and in a recent financial briefing, Nintendo described mobile as “a pillar of revenue.”
Well, the wait could be over soon.
Zelda and Donkey Kong being prepared for iOS?
Destructoid has uncovered two Nintendo trademark filings for ”Mario vs. Donkey Kong and ”Spirit Tracks,” a Zelda game that first made its debut on the Nintendo DS in 2009. What’s interesting about these filings is that they’re related to a “program for smartphone.”
The filing also mentions a “program for home video game machine” and “downloadable video game program,” so they could be titles for Nintendo’s other consoles. However, the fact that “smartphone” gets a mention is hugely exciting stuff.
It suggests Nintendo is at least considering mobile platforms like iOS for these titles — both of which have already seen releases on the company’s portable consoles and could work well on touch-based devices.
We shouldn’t get our hopes up just yet, however. A trademark filing isn’t proof of anything, and even if Nintendo is working on something, we can’t be sure it won’t be scrapped. What we can be sure of is that Nintendo would be crazy to not bring Zelda to iOS.
