WhatsApp is finally giving iPhone users media previews inside their notifications.

When you receive an image or a GIF, you’ll have the option to view it without having to unlock your phone and open WhatsApp. The new feature can be disabled if you don’t like it, however.

WhatsApp might be the most popular messaging service on the planet, with more than 1 billion users worldwide, but it isn’t always the most advanced. It took a long time for the service to offers things like voice and video calling, which were available inside other chat apps.

Until now, WhatsApp notifications have been lagging behind, too. When you received an image, there was no way to see it without opening up the WhatsApp app.

That’s no longer the case.

WhatsApp notifications pick up media previews

The latest WhatsApp update brings media previews to notifications. The next time you receive an image or GIF, you’ll be able to press on it using 3D Touch to view the content inside the notification. Alternatively, you can swipe left and tap the “View” button.

Media previews are enabled by default when you install the latest WhatsApp update, though there is a bug that is preventing the feature from working for some users for now. WhatsApp promises it is working on a fix.

If you decide you don’t want media previews, the feature can be disabled from within WhatsApp’s settings menu.

The latest version of WhatsApp is available to download from the App Store now.
