The latest snatch-and-grab Apple Store robbery didn’t turn out all that well for the thieves.
Over the weekend, the Apple Store at The Oaks mall in Thousand Oaks, California, was targeted by three men who walked in and began snatching products. But angry customers got involved, leading to all three would-be thieves being arrested.
Customers tackled two of the three men, making a citizen’s arrest. Deputies then apprehended the third in a getaway car leaving the mall. They also arrested two women believed to be in the vehicle.
A spate of recent Apple Store robberies
Stopping thieves in an Apple Store would be good news anytime. Here, however, it may be especially welcome. That’s because the thieves are thought to be repeat offenders who hit other Apple Stores as well.
This includes a Northridge Apple Store earlier on the same day they were arrested, where $10,000 worth of products were stolen.
A spate of other Apple Store robberies have taken place across California. This includes recent thefts in Roseville and Fresno. It’s not clear whether the same thieves may have been behind some of these thefts as well. Either way, good on the citizens who were able to help law enforcement bring in this latest batch of robbers.
One final word of wisdom for would-be thieves: Although it might seem like Apple Stores are a good place to lift expensive merchandise, that’s not really true. Smartly, Apple uses special versions of its software on all its demo devices, rendering them useless if stolen.
As a result, you may be able to sell the pinched device for spare parts, but not much else.
