Apple hosted Nobel laureate Malala Yousafzai for a discussion at Apple Park on Monday.
A Pakistani activist for female education, 21-year-old Yousafzai is the youngest Nobel Prize laureate in history. Apple teamed up with Yousafzai’s Malala Fund back in January, with the goal of supporting education among girls around the world.
“‘If you stand for truth, you cannot lose.’ Honored to host @Malala at Apple Park today with @lisapjackson,” Tim Cook wrote on Twitter. “We are proud of the work Apple is doing with @MalalaFund to advance girls’ education around the world.”
An accompanying photo posted by Cook shows himself, Yousafzai, and Apple’s VP of Environment, Policy and Social Initiatives Lisa Jackson posing together for a selfie. The event, which was open to Apple employees, took place at Apple Park’s Steve Jobs Theater.
Working to empower girls around the world
“We believe that education is a great equalizing force, and we share Malala Fund’s commitment to give every girl an opportunity to go to school,” Tim Cook said in a statement earlier this year when Apple teamed up with Yousafzai’s Malala Fund. “Malala is a courageous advocate for equality. She’s one of the most inspiring figures of our time, and we are honored to help her extend the important work she is doing to empower girls around the world.”
The goal of the Malala Fund is to give every girl the right to 12 years of free, safe, and quality education. Apple’s support allowed the organization to extend its funding programs to India and Latin America. Tim Cook has often talked about his desire for Apple to be a “force for good” in the world.
Apple regularly hosts inspirational speakers who come to speak at its Cupertino campus.
