2018 iPad Pro could take another design cue from iPhone X

It’s looking increasingly likely that the new iPad Pro models coming this fall will look like super-size iPhone X devices. That means no Home button and a nearly-edge-to-edge display.

Everyone has been assuming that this means the corners of the screen will be rounded too, and now there’s evidence of that.

Every iPad up until now has had square corners. That was also true of iOS handsets until the iPhone X. And now it appears Apple is carrying that design element to all its devices. Each of the 2018 iPhone models will have rounded corners, for example.

And Apple’s iOS 12 simulator has an iPad mask that makes the screen corners appear equally rounded, according to 9to5Mac. It was created for models code-named J3xx, apparently the internal designation for 2018 iPad Pro devices.

Other 2018 iPad Pro changes

Replacing Touch ID with Face ID will be the driving force for many changes in the upcoming professional-grade iPads. It will remove the need for the Home button, allowing Apple to make the devices smaller.

A small image of the 2018 iPad Pro found buried in the most recent iOS 12 beta seemingly confirmed the redesign. Surprisingly, there’s no screen cutout like the iPhone X’s famous notch.

An ongoing mystery is what appears to be a new port just above the Lightning port on a leaked schematic. What this is for is currently anyone’s guess.

New iPad Pro offerings are anticipated this fall, likely after the debut of the 2018 iPhone models in September. They’ll certainly be out before the start of the holiday shopping season.
