There are few game franchises I poured more time and energy into as a kid than SimCity. From the mid-1990s, the classic metropolis-building strategy games were guaranteed a place on whichever computer I owned at the time.
Jump forward to 2018, and the not-dissimilar Pocket City has just landed in the App Store. And if you’re a fan of Will Wright’s construction classic, this loving tribute will certainly appeal. Check out the trailer below.
Build your dream city
For those who have never played a city-building game, the premise is simple: you, err, build a city. This means laying down roads and public utilities; assigning areas as residential, industrial or commercial land; and then doing whatever it takes to attracts residents and businesses to CultofMac-ville — or whatever you choose to name your urban hub. All while keeping a careful eye on finances, of course.
This isn’t the first time a city-building game has come to iOS, we should note. A few years back, an official SimCity showed up on iOS. Sadly, just like the iOS remixes of classic Macintosh and PC titles Rollercoaster Tycoon and Dungeon Keeper, this had its money out for your cash, via in-app purchases.
Fortunately, Pocket City is nowhere near as devious. The game costs $4.99 (which, even without adjusting for inflation, I’m pretty certain is less money than the 1989 SimCity cost on Mac). Once you’ve spent that money to download the game, you can play it as much as you want without having to throw down a single additional cent. Good times!
Pocket City is available to download from the App Store right now. If you’re looking for a great title to get you through the remaining three days until the weekend — and beyond — you simply can’t go wrong!
