The legal war between Apple and Samsung is finally over.
After waging war against each other in the courtroom for over seven years, the two sides have finally agreed to a settlement that will end all remaining claims and counterclaims.
Apple was awarded $539 million in damages by a jury earlier this year after it was found that Samsung violated its design patents. The case originally started in 2011. Apple was originally awarded $1 billion in damages, but a series of appeals pushed the ruling all the way to the Supreme Court.
How much Samsung agreed to pay Apple hasn’t been disclosed. The case revolved around a number of design and utility patents from the iPhone and its software that Samsung copied on its Android phones.
Here’s the official court statement:
“Plaintiff Apple Inc. and Defendants Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd., Samsung Electronics America, Inc., and Samsung Telecommunications America, LLC would like to inform the Court that they have agreed to drop and settle their remaining claims and counterclaims in this matter.
IT IS HEREBY STIPULATED AND AGREED, by and between the parties and subject to the approval of the Court, that pursuant to Federal Rules of Civil Procedure 41(a) and 41(c), all remaining claims and counterclaims in this action are hereby dismissed with prejudice, to the extent such are still pending, and all parties shall bear their own attorneys’ fees and costs.”
I never thought I’d see the day when these two smartphone giants finally decide to start fighting. Now the two companies can get back to focusing on making better smartphones.
