Tweetbot has long been our favorite third-party Twitter client for a whole bunch of awesome reasons — and now there’s even more. Tweetbot 3 today landed on macOS, bringing night mode, GIF and video previews, timeline filters, and more.

What’s more, developer Tapbots promises that Tweetbot will continue to work even if Twitter rolls out its controversial clampdown on unofficial apps.

Lots of third-party Twitter clients for Mac and iOS have come and gone over the years. Only a small few of the best ones have stood the test of time. Tweetbot, thanks to its highly-polished design and impressive feature set, is one of those, and it keeps getting better.

Tweetbot 3 lands on Mac

Tweetbot 3 has landed in the Mac App Store. It takes everything you love about its predecessors and combines it with terrific new features that make navigation, timeline management, and more easier than ever. It also looks good when the lights go down.

The night mode you’ve been enjoying in Tweetbot on iOS has now made its way to Mac. It makes the app easier on the eyes — especially if you use it in dimly-lit rooms late at night. It also makes images, videos, and other media look even better.

While we’re on the subject of media, Tweetbot 3 boasts inline GIF and video previews. Simply hold your mouse cursor over a GIF or video in your timeline and it will start playing automatically. A click will open it up inside Tweetbot’s “lightning fast new media player.”

Timeline management is a breeze

Tweetbot also boasts a number of new tools to make navigating and managing your timelines quicker and easier. Its expandable sidebar gives you rapid access to subsections like lists, saved searches, and direct messages, while drag-and-drag columns let you customize your view in an instant.

You can also take advantage of timeline filters to highlight the content that’s most important to you, and mute filters that weed out the tweets you don’t want to see.

These aren’t dramatic changes, but Tweetbot wasn’t in need of a major rethink. Tapbots has simply brought the features and improvements we’ve been asking for to an app that was already brilliantly built. But getting your hands on those features is going to cost you.

Tweetbot 3 is a paid upgrade

Tweetbot 3 isn’t a free upgrade if you’re already a Tweetbot user; it’s a brand new app, rewritten from the ground up, that’s on sale for $9.99 for a limited time. There are no additional in-app purchases to unlock extra features — you get everything for under $10.

And it’s well worth it. Tweetbot is the best third-party Twitter client available. What’s more, Tapbots promises that it will continue to work, even if Twitter rolls out the dreaded changes it has been threatening for third-party clients.

“Twitter initially announced that they would be making streaming API changes that would affect 3rd party clients like Tweetbot. After much outcry, these changes have been indefinitely delayed,” Tapbots explains on its website.

“Even if these changes are eventually made we’ll be able to work around the majority of them. In the worst case scenario we won’t be able show notifications for Likes/Retweets and notifications for Tweets, Mentions, Quotes, DMs & Follows would be delayed for 1-2 minutes. You’ll still be able to read your timeline, mentions, DMs and post Tweets just like you do today.”

You can download Tweetbot 3 from the Mac App Store now.
