Spotify will finally deliver its first Apple Watch app this year, according to a new report.

It could get an official reveal at the Worldwide Developers Conference in June alongside “StreamKit,” a new framework for watchOS 5 that will boost the cellular Apple Watch’s standalone capabilities.

Apple Watch is three years old next month, and yet it has never been graced by Spotify support. The world’s largest music streaming platform has shunned the world’s most successful smartwatch. But according to one report, that’s going to change.

Spotify could land on Apple Watch this June

An “anonymous and unverified tipster,” who claims to have been involved with the project, tells MacRumors that a Spotify app for watchOS will be unveiled at WWDC.

“The app will supposedly be a lead example of Apple’s tentatively named StreamKit framework that will enable cellular Apple Watch models to receive push notifications from third-party apps like Facebook and Twitter, completely independent from a paired iPhone, on watchOS 5,” reads the report.

Spotify on an LTE-enabled Apple Watch would presumably have full support for music streaming — just like Apple Music. A paired iPhone, or an offline playlist, would be required on models without cellular support, unless Spotify decides it will be exclusive to that one particular device.

Don’t get your hopes up

It might be best to avoid getting your hopes up until Spotify for Apple Watch is confirmed. Because this is an “anonymous and unverified” source, the claims must be taken with a pinch of salt.

It wouldn’t be too surprising to see Spotify finally come to Apple Watch; Spotify has already hired developer Andrew Chang, creator of a third-party Spotify app for watchOS — pictured above — that never got an official release.

But would Apple really allow Apple Music’s biggest competitor to unveil a new app at WWDC, as a showcase for a new watchOS framework? That seems unlikely. We can’t even get Spotify on HomePod.
