A mophie juice pack air for iPhone X has been approved, if not announced. The case will come with a built-in battery that supports wireless charging.
The iPhone X has support for Qi wireless charging built in, but a case that’s also an external battery could block that. That’s why the upcoming juice pack air itself supports Qi. It could be charged with Apple’s own AirPower charging pad, which is expected soon.
mophie’s product hasn’t yet been announced, but Macotakara noticed that the case received approval from the Wireless Power Consortium, the industry group that oversees the Qi wireless charging standard. mophie apparently noticed, too, because the trade group removed the product from its website — but not before the details went public.
Charging itself and iPhone X
This mophie wireless charging case is almost certainly a modified version of the juice pack air for iPhone 7, already on the market. The internal battery in that accessory can be wirelessly charged, but it plugs into the handset’s Lightning port to transfer power. There’s also a micro-USB port on the bottom edge of the case for quicker charges. LEDs on the back show the current battery level.
The case must wrap around the bottom of the iPhone, so the speakers would be covered if mophie hadn’t built in forward-facing speaker ports.
According to the Wireless Power Consortium, the juice pack air for iPhone X includes a 1,720mAh battery, which could add up to 9 hours of talk time. Apple built a 2,716mAh battery into its phone, so this case will certainly add significantly to the time between recharges.
mophie‘s upcoming iPhone X case supports Qi version 1.1.2, as well as the Basic Power Profile charging at 5 watts. That’s not as quick as Fast Charge, which offers 7.5 watts.
Not all the details on the mophie juice pack air for iPhone X are known at this time. The exact size, for instance, the color options, or most importantly the price. That said, the iPhone 7 version goes for $99.95, and the upcoming model likely will land in the same neighborhood.
Other iPhone X charging options
It isn’t necessary to wait on mophie to get a battery case for the iPhone X. The other options aren’t from companies as well known, though.
Alpatronix offers one with a 4,200mAH battery, and it’s priced at $59.95. Another is from Zohmo, with a 3,000mAh battery and a $28.88 price tag. And these are just two examples. Companies like I.VALUX, ZeroLemon, and many more have similar offerings.
