Twitter just killed off its official app for Mac.

The company says it is focusing its efforts on an experience that is consistent across platforms, so users on macOS will be forced to use Twitter in their web browsers.

Twitter reported the first quarterly profit in its 12-year history earlier this month. Things were finally starting to look up for the micro-blogging platform, which now boasts more than 68 million users. But Twitter just gave a large number of those a big kick in the teeth.

Twitter won’t offer a Mac app

The official Twitter app for macOS is no longer available to download. And in a month, you won’t be able to use it at all.

“We’re focusing our efforts on a great Twitter experience that’s consistent across platforms,” it explained in a tweet on Friday afternoon. “So, starting today the Twitter for Mac app will no longer be available for download, and in 30 days will no longer be supported.”

“For the full Twitter experience on Mac, visit Twitter on web.”

The Twitter app for macOS was actually pretty decent. Better third-party alternatives like Tweetbot and Twitterrific are available, but for those who didn’t want to spend a penny, Twitter worked well and offered all the features most users needed.

It was certainly a whole lot better than using Twitter in a web browser, which doesn’t support multiple accounts and features like automatic timeline updating. That makes Twitter’s decision to kill the app baffling to most users.

Support for the app has been spotty, however, and pro users have never been big fans. Nevertheless, lots of loyal Twitter users are sad to see it go.

Useless platform, abandoned it long ago.

Thanks for the anecdote. Very useful. /s

Twitter is somewhat useful as a replacement for RSS but as a “community” Twitter is altogether toxic. If you’re not left-leaning you’re called a misogynistic Nazi, and if you’re not right-leaning you’re called a cuckold.

They ban all speech that goes against their narrative, so why use them on any platform?

    • Daniel Hertlein says:

Really? They ban all speech that goes against “their” narrative? I wasn’t aware of this. Please share this twitter narrative so that I too can abide by/defy it.

Meaning he’s the one neo-Nazi who got put into a time out, and it’s as bad as that time when mommy failed to cut the crusts of his PBJ. (And that’s also why he hates women.)

Reported for libel. Either have an actual argument or shut up about the genocide you support.

Pay more attention, then. Your lack of awareness is no one’s problem but your own.

Until Apple has apps that run on iOS and macOS (supposedly coming) , in which case you can run the iOS app on your desktop.

So “Alice” will be using Twitter less because they won’t be supporting the desktop app. But otherwise, she was okay with the neo Nazis, Russian troll bots, death threats, rape threats and other abuse women need to endure on the platform. Okay.
