With Christmas coming, it’s probably not the time of year to be spending a whole lot of money on yourself — knowing that there’s plenty of other things you may need to splash your cash on.

Which is why it’s great news that Layton’s Mystery Journey: Katrielle and the Millionaires’ Conspiracy, one of my previously recommended best games of the year, has slashed its $15.99 price tag for the holidays.

A fun brain teaser for the holidays

A fun point-and-click adventure boasting sumptuously animated visuals, the Professor Layton games have been around since the days of the Nintendo DS handheld.

The latest game in the series — now featuring Prof Layton’s daughter Katrielle in the lead role — debuted on iOS and Android earlier this year, prior to porting over to the Nintendo 3DS in the fall.

It combines a mystery plot (in which you’re hunting Professor Layton, who has gone missing) and assorted puzzles for a game that’s sure to keep you entertained over the coming weeks, when chances are you won’t feel like leaving the house too much. There’s plenty of humour, too, and some impressive voice acting that adds up to a truly premium experience.

The game’s price is now set at $7.99, a shade over half its usual price — and well under the $40 you’d pay for one of the Nintendo games on the DS or 3DS. There are in-app purchases available, but these aren’t essential in the same way they are in many games.

You can download Layton’s Mystery Journey: Katrielle and the Millionaires’ Conspiracy from the App Store, available for iOS devices running iOS 9.0 and above.
