Apple is set to ship a massive 88.8 million iPhones this quarter, a new report claims. If correct, this would be the greatest number of iPhones ever shipped in one quarter.

That’s according to research firm IHS Markit, which reports that the iPhone X is selling phenomenally well, and is on track to give Apple a record-breaking year in 2018.

Reports suggesting that the iPhone X is a success are nothing new. However, the IHS Market report does contain a few interesting tidbit and factoids. For example, it notes that the iPhone 8 already represents 2 percent of the iPhone active install base in eight countries. It’s most widely adopted in markets with high gross domestic product (GDP) per head, such as Singapore, Denmark, Switzerland and Japan.

In the United States, its adoption levels are currently matching the iPhone 8 Plus, and beating previous adoption levels of the iPhone 8 and 7 Plus.

Interestingly, the report notes that the iPhone 7 actually showed greater initial success in the U.S., although that handset did not have to compete with two other models of next-gen iPhone, each of which diluted its sales.

For me, the most intriguing factoid from the report is one stating that the iPhone X is selling particularly well in markets where the iPhone Plus models have done well in the past.

Given that both are higher priced, higher end handsets, that’s no great shock. However, other reports have suggested that 2017 is the first year where the 5.5-inch iPhone Plus handset has overtaken its smaller 4.7-inch sibling. Since the iPhone X is selling especially well in markets where the iPhone Plus led the way, it’s somewhat surprising to hear that the iPhone 8 Plus has done as well as it has!
