Apple is expanding its Swift app development curriculum to cover more than 30 community colleges across the U.S. in the 2017-2017 school year.
In addition to the existing colleges adopting the curriculum, it was now be offered by Austin Community College District (ACC), one of the nation’s largest higher learning institutions, with 74,000 students.
“We’re thrilled to have Apple join our mission to make Austin more affordable for people who already live in the city,” said Austin Mayor Steve Adler. “Apple is going to be a force multiplier in the community’s ongoing efforts to lift 10,000 out of poverty and into good jobs over the next five years.”
The importance of education
Apple launched its Swift development program back in May this year. In addition to various community colleges around the country, the curriculum is also being taught in some high schools, and is available as a free download from the iBooks Store.
The course includes assorted exercises, mini-projects and quizzes for students wanting to learn Apple’s programing language, along with the necessary presentations and grading guides for teachers.
This year, Apple has been heavily pushing the number of jobs it has helped create due to its technologies. In a recently launched website, Apple shared some details about these “two million … and counting” jobs in the United States — which includes many people earning a living using the Swift programming language.
