Apple could be planning to add a pause and resume function to its Camera app in iOS 11. References to the feature have been spotted in the company’s beta code, but it’s not yet clear which devices will support it.
As we’ve learned in recent weeks, Apple’s code hides a lot of secrets. The firmware it released for HomePod has revealed all kinds of juicy details about iPhone 8, including its new design and features like tap to wake and facial recognition.
In the iOS 11 betas, developers have spotted references to other features that are yet to appear. One of those is the ability to pause and resume video recording inside the Camera app, discovered by developer Daniel Niyazov.

This would allow you to stop shooting for a moment and then add to your video without having to combine two clips inside an editing app like iMovie. It’s a feature found on many other smartphones, but it is yet to make its way to iPhone.
What’s unclear at this point is whether this will be available on existing devices — or whether it could be exclusive to iPhone 8’s more powerful hardware. But if it was supported by iPhone 7 and older units, why isn’t it already available in the iOS 11 betas?
Perhaps it will pop up in a later release ahead of the update’s public rollout this fall, but we wouldn’t be surprised if Apple holds onto it and makes it a selling point for its next-generation devices.
