The excellent empire-building and battling sim Total War: Warhammer is coming to Mac later this month.

Taking the turn-based strategy and real-time battles formula behind games like Total War: Rome II and adding a fantasy element, this is one of the best Warhammer games I’ve ever played. Check out its trailer below.

One Warhammer to rule them all

In Total War: Warhammer, players get to control their choice of mythic races, each of whom plays very differently to the others. You then build your empire in a battle for the Old World, which inevitably involves some epic battles.

I’ve always liked the Warhammer lore, but found it a bit overwhelming to get into. This is particularly true for the medieval fantasy universe, which I always shirked in favor of the futuristic sci-fi Warhammer 40,000. This game demonstrates why the former is so great, with a varied map, intriguing armies, and a story-driven campaign that somehow doesn’t step on the toes of the strategy formula.

It costs a hefty $59.99, is sure to need a pretty decent Mac to run, and isn’t available until April 18, but this is a shoe-in for the top Mac conversions of the year. (For the record, the Vampire Counts are the most fun to play as!)
