Haven’t played Super Mario Run since the first few weeks after its release? Nintendo is hoping to lure you back, as well as recruiting fresh players, with the 2.0 upgrade of its endless runner game.
The update beings new playable characters, new courses in Toad Rally, new buildings, greater ease of play, and assorted other changes and improvements.
Notes for the update list the improvements as follows:
- You can now get Yoshis of 4 different colors to join! Play Toad Rally with a Yoshi of a particular color to get more Toads of that color!
- More of the game is now available to play for free!
- New buildings to be added!
- Easier to get Rally Tickets in the Bonus Game House!
- Easy Mode can now be selected before starting a course!
- The appearance rates of different colored Toads in Toad Rally has been adjusted.
- The explanations in “How to Play” are now easier to understand.
- Ease of play has been improved.
- Other changes and improvements.
Super Mario Run, the first official Mario outing on iOS, arrived in the App Store back in December. It immediately set a new download record of 40 million downloads in only its first four days, although there were reports that Nintendo was disappointed by its failure to convert free customers (who received a demo of the game) into paying ones, willing to shell out $9.99 for the full version.
Other complaints, meanwhile, have included the fact that despite the premium cost, security issues mean that gamers still require an “always on” internet connection to play.
This latter point is certainly a valid criticism, which partly speaks to the fact that Nintendo is more keen on using the game to push gamers to purchase its consoles than in providing a self-contained, wholly satisfactory mobile experience.
With that said, it’s good to see that Nintendo isn’t making the mistake of Pokémon GO and leaving it too late to start introducing major upgrades.
