Apple has officially opened registration for its free “Hour of Code” workshops, which this year will run every day for a week at around 500 Apple stores around the world.

In previous years, Apple has offered just one day of workshops for its introduction to programming events, produced in partnership with Code.org.

The events will run between December 5 and December 11, and will cover the basics of CS, and an introduction to Swift Playgrounds, Apple’s iPad app which teaches the basics of its Swift programming language.

“Hour of Code embodies our vision for Apple stores as a place for the community to gather, learn and be entertained,” Apple retail guru Angela Ahrendts said in a press release. “We’re proud to introduce the Swift Playgrounds app into the workshops and honored to again work side-by-side with Code.org on this incredibly important initiative. Hour of Code is one of the absolute highlights of the year for both our teams and the families that visit our stores.”

Apple is also offering tools for teachers, which allow them to take the lessons into their local schools and community centers to help raise awareness about the importance of coding.

Apple has officially been playing a part in the Hour of Code initiative since 2014, although the importance of getting young people involved with coding (also seen through the company’s WWDC scholarships) was something Steve Jobs was also an outspoken advocate of.
