“Immersive” is a big buzzword in tech these days, as creators and consumers of digital media seek ever-more-powerful ways to get sucked into the screen. The latest version of the top-shelf LG UltraWide monitor adds new technology that takes that elusive immersive experience to the next level.

LG is well-known for its high-end LED monitors, but the new LG UltraWide 38UC99 raises the bar yet again. The gorgeous curved monitor delivers 38 inches (OK, 37.5 inches, measured diagonally) of high-performing video goodness, with a properly cinematic 21:9 aspect ratio. Watching video on the LG UltraWide, with audio pumping through its built-in high-performance speaker, creates an effect akin to being in a movie theater — although somehow even more immersive (and less sticky).

World’s first curved monitor with IPS

If that sounds newfangled, it is. This is the world’s first curved monitor with in-plane switching (IPS) technology, which fixes the distortion caused by drifting outside a particular viewing angle when using typical LED monitors.

That makes this monitor perfect for designers, photographers, video producers, gamers and any other creative application where clarity and room for collaboration are key. Since it’s not dependent upon viewing angle, you can even combine pairs (or more!) of these monitors (setup is simple with LG’s Screen Split functions). You’ll get resolutions four times clearer than basic HD, courtesy of the LG UltraWide’s massive 3,840-by-1,600-pixel screen.

But with today’s high user standards, all the features and figures in the world don’t mean anything if your eyeballs aren’t dazzled. And the new LG UltraWide is definitely a dazzler.

With an effective response time of 1 millisecond, motion blur reduction and FreeSync to balance the hardware acceleration with the monitor, even the most demanding, high-frame-rate gaming plays out as smooth as we’ve ever seen. After a moment, the curve of the monitor merges into your natural field of vision.

OK, so it looks and performs great. Given LG’s track record, that shouldn’t surprise anybody. The latest UltraWide monitor also packs a few other goodies. USB 3.0 and USB C ports let it double as a high-speed charging hub. And built-in Bluetooth connectivity makes the monitor a great way to play music from your other devices. This monitor was clearly built to be a central element in any media center, whether for creating or consuming content.

Now the extra-exciting bit. If you’ve been watching this space, you may remember last year’s LG UltraWide Festival Dream Setup competition, where three top tech YouTubers got teamed up with three lucky contestants to build their dream computing rigs.

Well, it was a hit — and it’s back, this time with LG’s latest 21:9 UltraWide serving as literal and proverbial canvas. This year, 15 lucky entrants will nab an LG UltraWide 38-inch IPS monitor. The big winner will receive a creator workstation worth a whopping $10,000, and will see their work shared far and wide.

If you’re looking to get ahead of the curve with your media, you’d do well to incorporate this gorgeous, immersive monitor. If you’re looking to go even further, enter for your shot to participate in the latest UltraWide Festival.
