Apple suppliers in Taiwan are already taking on new recruits in preparation for the iPhone 7. Local sources say that the design of this year’s device is more complex to build than previous models, so manufacturers are getting to work early.
A number of Apple suppliers have recently made massive layoffs in response to falling iPhone demand, but with the iPhone 7 on the horizon, they need all the help they can get.
Foxconn, Apple’s largest manufacturing partner, has begun advertising factory jobs on its website, where it calls for “a large number of ordinary workers” aged between 18 and 40 who will need to start work immediately.
Foxconn also encourages applicants to “hurry to apply,” and warns that they may not be able to get through to its jobs hotline due to the demand for these posts. “Please call a few times more and wait in patience,” it adds. “We will get back to you and make arrangements accordingly.”
Pegatron, which laid off around 6,000 workers earlier this year, is also looking to bolster its workforce again to participate in iPhone 7 assembly ahead of the launch this fall.
Economic Daily News reports that both companies have kicked off their hiring sprees at least a month early this year. It’s thought to be the first time Foxconn has started looking for new recruits on the mainland in May.
That’s because this year’s iPhone design is thought to be more complex than previous iterations, despite looking identical to the iPhone 6s on the outside. Not only will assembly take longer, then, but staff will also require more training.
This year’s iPhone upgrade is expected to bring Apple’s next-generation A10 processor, more RAM, an improved iSight camera, and a Smart Connector. Apple is also expected to introduce a dual-lens camera, but that will likely be exclusive to the larger iPhone 7 Plus.
