Buggy iOS app lets verified Twitter users give others blue ticks

A strange bug in Twitter’s official iOS app is allowing verified users to give other people blue ticks. The phenomenon occurs with a simple retweet, but unfortunately for those who aren’t official VIPs, the status is short-lived.

Obtaining that mighty blue tick isn’t easy. Only Twitter really knows the secret criteria, but before you can even be considered, you first need to be interesting (don’t just tweet about your dinner) — and then you need lots of followers.

But thanks to a bug in the latest Twitter update for iOS, verified users have been given the power to make others VIPs. By simply retweeting another user, they can make a blue tick appear alongside their Twitter username.

In the screenshot below from The Next Webyou’ll notice that Patrick de Laive appears to have a verified account — but that’s only because his tweet was retweeted by TNW’s social media guru, Matt Navarra.

Before you rush off to find a Twitter celebrity who will retweet you, there are some things you should be aware of: Your bogus blue tick won’t appear on your Twitter profile — only that one tweet — and only the verified user who reweeted you will be able to see it.

Nevertheless, it might make you feel special for a little bit, and you can always get a screenshot and show it to all your friends. You phoney.
