Just a few months after release, the Apple TV has just about 3,600 apps in its App store. That’s a ton of entertainment, games, and media apps waiting to be discovered on the big screen.

Unfortunately, there isn’t a single killer app among them.

AppLovin, a mobile adverting and analysis firm, is hoping to change all that with the first ever Apple TV contest and hackathon, to be held in San Francisco this coming April.

There are two ways to participate in this event. One is the hackathon – participants will have all day to create a great app for Apple TV that might net them a $5,000 prize. The event will occur on the weekend of April 16-17, where AppLovin will present various creative hacking challenges along with food, drink, and prizes. Two lucky hackers will get to demo their app during the contest on Sunday the 17th of April.

The second way is to take the next month or so to build an amazing Apple TV app and enter it into the AppLovin contest, which has prizes of up to $25,000. Apps in this contest need to be submitted by March 31 and will be judged by other developers, venture capitalists and journalists.

Whether the participating developers take their time to create a visionary Apple TV app and submit to the big contest or spend a fun day in April hacking something awesome together, we’ll all get the benefit of the output.

Here’s hoping that the winning apps contribute both amazing apps as well as a new interest in making apps for Apple’s big TV device.

Because, for now, there’s 3,600 apps with nothing on.
