Since it was first released, people keep asking when the iPad will be able to run OS X, and while iOS keeps on becoming more like OS X with every passing version, you still can’t run Mac apps on your iPad… right?
Not quite. Technically, it’s possible to run Mac apps on your iPad Air 2. But prepare for it to be sloooooooow, and don’t expect El Capitan, Yosemite, or even Snow Leopard compatibility. This technique tops out with Mac OS 7.5.5, which was first released 19 years ago.
YouTuber Hacking Jules figured out a way to run Mac OS 7.5.5 on his jailbroken iPad Air 2 by installing the DosBox emulator, DosPad, then running the Virtual Macintosh emulator Vmac. It takes almost two minutes for Mac OS 7.5.5. to boot up – which is about what it took back in those days anyway – but once it does, things run smoothly.
HackingJules then goes on to use the same technique to run Mac OS 6.1, which it does even more ably. Of course, the fact that the iPad Air 2 can run vintage operating systems isn’t anything new: we first saw Apple’s latest tablet boot Windows 98 back in February last year. How long until the iPad is powerful enough to Hackintosh?
