Once Apple brought games to the Apple TV, it was a no-brainer that we’d all want to play them together on the couch in our living room.

Apple requires developers to support the new Siri Remote, but they can also allow third-party game controllers to move stuff around on the screen, too.

Crossy Road, the excellent Frogger-like hit iOS game with the seemingly endless supply of cute creatures to play as (that was also an Apple TV launch title), goes one step further. If you want to play with a buddy and don’t have a second gamepad, you can have your pal play Crossy Road on Apple TV with just their iPhone.

Here’s how.

Launch Crossy Road on your Apple TV with the Siri Remote, then swipe up on the touch surface to go to the character picker. You’ll need to have at least two characters unlocked — play a few rounds of single player if you don’t.

After you’ve swiped up to the chooser, swipe all the way to the left to select 2 Player mode. Click on the Siri Remote’s touch surface and you’ll get the 2 Player screen. Swipe left or right to choose your character, and click on the touch surface to confirm.

Now, launch Crossy Road on your pal’s iPhone and tap on the little triangle in the bottom right corner, then tap on the gamepad icon. you’ll see a character for P2. Swipe left and right to choose a different character. When you’re happy with the cute little creature, tap on the Play triangle to confirm your choice.

Once you’ve both chosen a character, you’ll go right to the main gameplay screen. Move your little buddies up, down, left and right to maneuver them ever upward while avoiding trains, vehicles, and the deadly water.

What a great feature to add for those of us who haven’t shelled out for a third-party gamepad, yet. If it doesn’t work at first, simply force-quit Crossy Road (double press Home, swipe to Crossy Road app, swipe up) and relaunch it.
