AT&T’s ‘unlimited’ iPhone data is about to get more expensive

If you’re one of the lucky sods who is still grandfathered into an AT&T unlimited data plan, you’re about to pay a little bit more for it.

AT&T announced yesterday that it will be hiking the price of a grandfathered unlimited data plan by $5 a month. It will now cost $35 a month for unlimited data, instead of just $30. That’s a bit of a bummer, but keep in mind, it’s the first price hike on AT&T’s unlimited data plan for seven years.

The carrier no longer allows customers to sign up for unlimited data: The $35 price will only affect iPhone users who signed up for their contract before the unlimited data plan was phased out, way back when the iPhone 3G was the newest hotness. But if you haven’t changed the terms of your contract since, you could still be “grandfathered” into the plan, although AT&T will throttle your speeds “if you exceed 22GB of data in a billing cycle and are in a congested area.”

If you’ve got such a plan, expect to start paying more in February 2016. Considering the rest of us pay twice that or more for limited data, consider yourself lucky.
